Being Thankful

The Holidays are upon us and soon everyone will be too busy to enjoy them.  I thought I would get started a little early on what I am thankful for rather than waiting until Thanksgiving.  I love that day that we set aside to really consider our lives and how good they really are.  I fear, though, that too many people get caught up in cooking and managing family relationships that they are mostly thankful when it is all over!

So here are some of my thoughts and of course opinions. :)

I feel that most of us are looking to create the “perfect” day.  The food, the table setting, the family relationships, the activities – all must be perfect in order to really enjoy the day.  How hard is that???  NO day is perfect.  NO family relationships are perfect.  How about being thankful that you do have family and that you do have food on your table.  Relax and laugh.  Sure, Aunt Jane always brings rolls that are over cooked.  And Tom and Mark always argue about which football game to watch.  Try just accepting all of that for what it is.  Don’t let it ruin everything for you.

One of the ways to have a good day is to expect that it will happen.  You know, the old mind/body thing keeps popping up no matter what I write about.  So if you go around thinking about your brother that doesn’t get along with your father, and how tired you will be from all the cooking, and being upset because grandma always takes a nap instead of helping clean up, then guess what.  That is exactly what  you will get.

Instead, consider that your brother/father relationship is what it is and it is up to them to right it.  Can you farm out some of that cooking?  Let your guests bring something.  Get your children to help cook.  Skimp by buying pies from the bakery.  It doesn’t have to be perfect!  Oh, and grandma?  Let her take that nap.  How many Thanksgiving dinners was she in charge and did most of the cleaning up?

Take this momen and DECIDE to be HAPPY!  Making that decision really works.

So what am I thankful for?  The usual – family, friends, a roof over my head and food on my table.  And this year?  A trip to LA to have Thanksgiving with my son, his wife, and my ONLY grandchild!  I don’t have to cook, either.  And will it be perfect?  Absolutely NOT!  And I will love every minute of it.

I hope you will do the same.
