Having Trouble Sleeping?

Sleeping baby

Oh, to sleep like a baby!

Do you have trouble sleeping?  Are you an Insomniac?

Many people suffer terrible from not being able to sleep.  Others of us have an occasional night where sleep eludes us.  At any rate, here are a few simple things to remember when preparing for bed.

1.  Get as much or as little sleep as your body needs.  Yes, the standard is 8 hours, but some people need 7 and others 9.  Figure out what is best for you and then arrange your sleep schedule accordingly.

2. Skip the TV before going to bed.  Filling your head with stressful, anxiety producing news shows or dramas certainly can keep you from relaxing your mind and body.  And the light coming from the TV screen (and computer monitor) stimulates your nervous system.

3.  Some say to keep you bedroom neat and clutter free.  But, if the mess and clutter don’t bother you and you don’t stress about the need to clean them up, then leave them.  It is more important to get your room as dark as possible.

4.  Many of us like to have our pets near when we sleep.  That’s fine, but keep them at the bottom of the bed or on the floor.  That cat on your head or dog between you and your sleeping partner prevent you from the natural movement of your body during sleep.

5.  Avoid late night stimulants.  These include coffee, tea, chocolate, cigarettes, etc.

If you only have an occasional night of difficulty sleeping, you may want to try an over the counter remedy.  If insomnia is an every night problem, you should consult your doctor.
